“Old School Legends Series” Highlights the 1990 “No More Wait ‘Til Next Year” Florida Gators
Dinner event and radio program hosted by Christner’s Prime Steak & Lobster will feature Gator All-Americans Shane Matthews, Kirk Kirkpatrick and Brad Culpepper
The “Talkin’ Old School with Roger Franklin Williams” radio program will host its “Old School Legends Series” on Monday, March 23 from 5-9 p.m. at Christner’s Prime Steak & Lobster located at 729 Lee Road in Orlando, Fla.
The dinner event and radio program will highlight the 1990 Florida Gators – Steve Spurrier’s first year as Florida Gator head coach, and the team that dramatically launched Florida Gator football from a “good but not great” football program into an era of consistent elite status in college football.
The evening’s lineup includes three All-Americans who played instrumental roles in the Gators success during that 1990 season:
- QB Shane Matthews, who emerged from the fifth string to lead the 1990 Gators to a 9-2 record, received All-American status and was a two-time SEC Player of the Year.
- TE Kirk Kirkpatrick, who led the SEC in receiving in 1990, was named Gator 1990 MVP and was awarded the esteemed “Fergie Ferguson Award” (the highest honor a Gator football player can receive).
- DT Brad Culpepper, who anchored the Gator defensive line in 1990, achieved All-American and All-SEC status and was awarded the prestigious Draddy Trophy, better known as the “Academic Heisman,” after the 1991 season.
The 1990 Gators opened the season with a stunning 50-7 victory over Oklahoma State on their way to a 9-2 record. Other highlights of that season include a 48-7 victory over then-No 4 ranked Auburn, a dominating 38-7 win over Georgia and a 47-15 victory at Kentucky that gave the 1990 Gators the best record in the SEC. Since then, accolades for the Gators include nine first-place finishes in the SEC, eight official SEC Championships, three national championships, consistent Top 10 rankings and numerous appearances in BCS Bowl and New Year’s six bowl games.
